MLB hot stove: Giants to offer Bryce Harper short-term deal, report saysSporting News — (Kirstie Chiappelli)
It seems Bryce Harper's meeting with the Giants was a successful one.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, San Francisco is positioning itself to offer the star outfielder a lucrative short-term deal.
The two sides met for a four-hour sit-down in Las Vegas on Monday after the Giants became the latest team to enter the sweepstakes for the six-time All-Star, who reportedly is seeking a mega contract worth $300 million. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said he didn't make the trip "just for show" and confirmed there was “mutual interest on both sides."
Other teams rumored to be interested in Harper include the Dodgers, Phillies, Angels, Yankees and Nationals, who would like to keep Harper in Washington.
Harper, 26, had a career-low .249 batting average last season, but hit .300 in the second half. The 2018 Home Run Derby winner also had 34 home runs and 100 RBIs.
He has spent all seven of his MLB seasons with the Nats.
