U.S. Open winner to earn biggest payday in major championship history

Whoever walks away with the Unites States Open trophy Sunday night, or possible Monday if there's a playoff, will also take home the biggest paycheck in major championship history.

The victor will earn $2.16 million for the win this year at Erin Hills, a raise of $360,000 from Dustin Johnson's $1.8 million check last year at Oakmont.

Here's a breakdown of the $12 million purse for the 117th U.S. Open:

The US Open has a $12m purse. Winner gets $2.16m, second place gets $1.296m. Players missing the cut got $10k— Ben Volin (@BenVolin) June 17, 2017

Sergio Garcia won $1.98 million in April for his Masters victory, while Jimmy Walker claimed $1.8 million last August at the PGA Championship, and Henrik Stenson earned just under $1.6 million for winning last year's Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The player that finishes in 66th place this week will earn $5,229 more than Jack Nicklaus won for his 1962 U.S. Open victory at Oakmont.
